Stretch Marks Removal
Stretch Marks Removal Summary
Stretch marks are very common skin findings. They occur due to a break in the connective tissue within the skin. This occurs after repetitive stretching and stress that is placed on the skin. About 90% of pregnant women will have some degree of stretch marks after pregnancy. While stretch marks pose no health problems, they often cause distress and deter individuals from wearing clothes that they love. Stretch marks removal with laser and INFINI can help improve the appearance of your skin over time.
About Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a fairly common skin condition. It affects areas that undergo repetitive stretching. Stretch marks result in scarring at the dermal level, and atrophy (loss of skin cells) at the epidermal level. Although it does not result in any medical problems, stretch marks cause much distress to those affected by it.
Some groups are more susceptible to stretch marks more than others. During pregnancy, common areas affected include the abdomen and breast, whereas male bodybuilders commonly get stretch marks on their shoulders. Adolescents who experience rapid growth during puberty may develop stretch marks at the thighs and backs. Overuse of some topical medications may also result in striae distensae.
Stretch marks may first start to appear pink in colour, then turn reddish (striae rubra) and finally overtime it lightens (striae alba). Striae rubra become apparent for about 4 months, while straie alba may start to appear for many months to years later.
Stretch Marks Removal Treatments
Stretch marks do not require any treatments in general. Treatments are aimed at improving the appearance of your stretch marks. There are several options to treat the various types of stretch marks. However, there is currently no single treatment that has been shown to totally remove stretch marks.
Usually a combination of techniques will greatly improve the appearance of your stretch marks.
Early Stretch Marks Treatment
For early stretch marks, prescription retinoids based creams can be given to improve the skin surface cell turnover rate.
Pulsed Dye Lasers uses a specific wavelength can target the redness of early stretch marks and stimulate collagen growth and repair. The 585nm vascular laser wavelength is specific for the haemoglobin that is responsible for giving the reddish appearance in striae rubra.
Mild redness and bruising can be expected after your laser treatment. This usually subsides in about 5-8 days. Repeated treatments of laser stretch marks removal tend to give better results.
Mature Stretch Marks Treatment
The INFINI treatment, based on micro-needling fractional radio-frequency technology is an advance treatment for a variety of skin conditions. The INFINI is a minimally invasive procedure for stretch marks removal for all skin types. It breaks down the scar tissue found within the deeper layers of the skin. Subsequently, new collagen is formed and the skin is strengthened and grows thicker over time. Typically 3-4 treatment sessions will give the best results. The INFINI treatment is effective, painless and safe in all skin types and is associated with little downtime.
We will prescribe a retinoid cream to be used about 4-5 days after your treatment to bring about further improvement.
